Semi permanent lip tattoo with lip filler
Can I get semi-permanent lip tattoo if I have lip filler?
Semi permanent lip tattoo with lip filler are two of the most popular treatments for lip enhancement. Many clients ask us if can combine the two treatments, and the answer is yes, but timing and order matter. If done correctly, these treatments can complement each other, and give you fuller, defined, and naturally blushed lips.
At Beauty Bar, our salon in Hertfordshire, we’re often asked how these procedures work together, what order they should be done in, and how long results last.
What is semi-permanent lip tattoo?
Semi-permanent lip tattoo (also called lip blush or permanent lip makeup) uses pigments and gentle tattoo technique to add natural colour and definition to the lips. This treatment can enhance lip borders for better shape, add long lasting colour from subtle nude tones to brighter shades, create more symmetrical look, reduce the need for daily application of a lipstick
Results last 2-5 years, and minor touch-ups may be needed to maintain colour freshness.
What is lip filler?
Lip filler is created by injecting hyaluronic acid gel to add volume, definition, and hydration to the lips. Depending on the technique, for example, the popular russian lip filler method, filler can also reshape the lips, create a more defined cupid’s bow, and smooth out fine lines in and around the mouth.
Lip filler usually lasts 8-12 months, although results may vary depending on metabolism, lifestyle, and product choice.
Can you combine lip fillers and lip tattoo?
Yes, you can combine both treatments, but not at the same time. When done in the correct order, they enhance each other’s results.
Lip fillers give the lips structure, volume, and symmetry.
Semi-permanent lip tattoo adds colour and definition.
Together, they can create lips that are fuller, more balanced, and with a natural-looking tint that lasts long after your lipstick wears off.

Which treatment should come first?
We prefer to choose the lip filler first.
It can improve shape and volume before tattooing.
Creates a more balanced foundation for tattoo pigment.
Works well if you want immediate plumpness and definition before adding colour.
Lips are plumper and less wrinkly, making the pigment deposit easier in the skin.
Lips are hydrated, which gives a nicer finish to the pigment.
Important: Regardless of choosing the filler or permanent makeup first, you should wait at least 4 weeks before having the other lip treatment. This allows swelling to settle and your lips to heal properly before getting another lip treatment.
What happens over time?
Your lip tattoo will last longer than your filler, the tattoo will be fading over the next 2-5 years. Your filler naturally dissolves in around 8-12 months and your lips may return closer to their natural size and shape. Filler can be topped up, usually once a year, to keep your lips plump and fresh.
How long do results last?
Lip filler 8-12 months (top-ups recommended once a year).
Semi-permanent lip tattoo 2-5 years, with colour refresh recommended every 1-2 years.
When combined you can enjoy both long-lasting lip colour and volume without constant maintenance.

Frequently asked questions about lip fillers and semi-permanent lip tattoo
How long should I wait between lip fillers and a semi-permanent lip tattoo?
You should wait at least 4 weeks before getting another lip treatment. This gives your lips time to heal, the swelling to go down, and the filler or pigment to integrate properly with your tissue.
Should I have a semi-permanent lip tattoo before or after lip filler?
We recommend having the lip filler first because it hydrates the lips, make them plumper and easier for the pigment to get implanted for an even finish.
Can lip tattoo pigment affect my filler?
No, the tattoo pigment does not affect the filler itself at all. The main concern is timing, as doing both treatments too close together will cause unnecessary irritation and affect the outcome. It should always be spaced 4-6 weeks between the treatments.
What if my filler wears off but I already have a lip tattoo?
If your filler dissolves naturally, your tattoo will still remain as it is. You may notice a slight change in how the pigment sits on your natural lip shape, as the lips will go back to a less plumped and more wrinkly look. You can always top up the filler as it naturally dissolves.
Is it safe to combine lip filler and semi-permanent lip tattoo?
Yes, as long as the treatments are spaced out and performed by a professional. Always check on the portfolio and technicians work for both procedures to make sure safe, and natural-looking results.
