What is lip filler correction?
Lip filler correction involves adjusting and partially or fully removing previously injected dermal filler to address issues such as:
- Migration – where filler moved beyond the intended area making lips look unnatural.
- Overfilling – excessive volume that causes disproportionate lips.
- Asymmetry – uneven distribution of filler which results in lopsided lips.
- Lumps or irregularities – uneven texture, lumps within the lips or superficial filler.
Correction is done using hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid fillers, which allows for the restoration of natural lip contour and shape.
What is lip filler migration?
Lip filler migration happens when the injected filler moves from its original placement, and this can happen due to:
- Over injecting or excessive volume (too much filler injected in one session).
- Improper injection technique.
- Repeated treatments without leaving the adequate time in between (we recommend minimum of 3 months between treatments).
- Some people have a very strong muscle around the lips (orbicularis oris) that if not treated with an anti wrinkle solution first, can push the filler out.
Migration can result in a “duck like” appearance or puffiness above the lip border.
What options do I have when correcting lip filler migration?
Full filler dissolving
For significant migration or overfilling, a complete dissolving with hyaluronidase is recommended. This will completely break down the existing filler, and return your lips to their natural state. It prepares the lips for potential re treatment after around 4 weeks. Depending on the outcome after dissolving, we may suggest to have tapes applied after your new lip filler appointment.
Partial dissolving and butterfly lips
In cases of minor migration or asymmetry, we can target the area around the lips and dissolve the filler around the lips only with very diluted dissolver. This can correct specific areas without removing all the filler from the lips. At the same time more filler is injected to correct the lips shape and a special suture tape is applied to the lips to prevent filler travelling to the unwanted areas.
The tape helps to:
- Support the correct lip shape during the initial healing phase (48 hours).
- Minimise filler migration back into the areas where it was migrated before.
However, it’s important to note that while taping may assist in maintaining and greatly improving the shape, it does not prevent migration completely.
