What is lip filler correction?

Lip filler correction involves partially or fully removing previously injected dermal filler to address issues like:

Migration, where filler moved beyond the intended area making lips look uneven or unnatural.

Overfilling, too much filler that causes disproportionate lips.

Asymmetry, unevenly distributed filler which results in lopsided lips.

Lumps or irregularities – uneven texture, lumps or superficial filler.

Filler is dissolved with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid filler.

 

What is lip filler migration?

Lip filler migration means that the filler has moved from lips to the skin around the lips.

This can be caused by injecting too much filler, improper injection technique, treatments were done too close together.

Some people have a very strong muscle around the lips (orbicularis oris). This muscle causes wrinkles around the lips (smokers lines), and can be responsible for pushing the filler above the lip. We sometimes recommend to treat it with anti wrinkle treatment to reduce its strength before having lip filler treatment.

Migration can result in a “duck lips” look or puffiness above the top lip.

How can I correct my migrated lip filler?

If you have a large migration or lips are overfilled, we usually suggest to dissolve it completely. This will bring your lips to their natural look and give us a clean canvas if you would like to have lip filler done again.

If your migration or asymmetry is minor, we can suggest butterfly lip technique, where we only partially dissolve the filler outside your lips, and add more filler to the lips correcting any uneven or asymmetrical parts. A special suture tape is applied around the lips to prevent filler travelling to the unwanted areas again.

What is the tape used for?

It supports the correct lip shape during the initial 48 hours, so the filler doesn’t migrate back into the areas where we dissolved it. The tape helps to improve the shape, but it can’t prevent migration back to the same areas completely.

Someone who had lip filler before, and the filler migrated outside the lip area.

How to prepare for the treatment?

Avoid blood thinners (e.g. aspirin, fish oil) for 2-3 days before treatment.

Do not drink alcohol 2 days before.

Let us know if you have and health conditions, allergies, or take medication.

 

Aftercare

We will give you detailed, printed out aftercare

Avoid exercise and sweating for a few days after treatment

Do not massage or apply any pressure to your lips

Drink 2l of water a day

Do not remove tapes for 48 hours, plan your appointment accordingly (e.g. before the weekend).

Can all types of lip filler be dissolved?

Only hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved. Permanent fillers can’t be dissolved and will require alternative treatment.

 

How soon after dissolving can I get new lip filler?

We recommend waiting 4 to 6 weeks before getting new lip filler.

 

How long do I have to keep the tapes on my lips?

The tapes should stay on for 48 hours.
