Permanent makeup FAQ Hertfordshire

How to choose the right permanent makeup for your face?

Permanent makeup is also called makeup tattoo, cosmetic tattooing, semi permanent makeup, and micropigmentation. It is used to enhance the look of eyebrows, eyes and lips while simplifying daily routine.

Making decisions about permanent makeup can raise some questions. Our Q&A section is here to give you clear, straightforward answers and help you make informed choices. From understanding the procedure to aftercare, we cover everything you need to know.

What is permanent makeup, and how is it different from traditional makeup?

Permanent makeup is a form of tattoo. It deposits pigment into the skin to enhance eyebrows, lips or eyes. Unlike traditional makeup, which is applied and removed daily, permanent makeup lasts for several years with touch ups every 12 or 24 months.

Difference between permanent and traditional makeup

Traditional makeup is applied daily, and permanent makeup stays intact for years, gradually fading over time.

Permanent makeup saves time, it’s ideal if you have a busy schedule or active lifestyle, it stays in place regardless of sweat, water, or weather.

Unlike traditional makeup that can smudge or wear off, permanent makeup stays put through your workouts, swimming, or on rainy days.

Permanent makeup can address concerns like sparse eyebrows, scars, or asymmetry.

What do you need to consider

While long lasting, permanent makeup fades over time. 12-24 month touch ups may be needed to maintain its fresh look.

Is permanent makeup suitable for everyone?

Semi permanent makeup is not suitable for everyone.

Who should avoid permanent makeup?

  • pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • people with medical conditions, such as autoimmune disorders, blood clotting issues, or during chemotherapy. Certain medications like blood thinners are contraindicated.
  • clients with keloids or hypertrophic scars.
  • known allergies to pigments.
  • people with unrealistic expectations about the outcome.

Aftercare

Proper aftercare is important to get good results. This includes protecting the area from the sun, following all instructions, and scheduling regular touch-ups to maintain colour and definition.

If you’re considering PMU, but have some concerns, drop us an email and we’ll be happy to help.

Will I need to shave my eyebrows before getting a semi permanent makeup?

Shaving your eyebrows is not necessary before getting a semi permanent eyebrow tattoo. We never ask clients to shave their eyebrow hair, and we encourage to keep the natural eyebrows intact, as it helps us get the most natural and flattering results.

Working with your natural hair creates a more realistic look, blending the tattooed areas with your existing brows.

How long does permanent makeup last?

Permanent makeup, also called semi permanent lasts from 2-5 years. This can depend on skin type, lifestyle, and how much you tan. The pigment gradually fades over rather than disappearing all at once.

For best results, an occasional touch up is recommended, usually every one to two years, to maintain the colour and definition.

Proper aftercare is important to help extend the life of your permanent makeup. This includes protecting treated areas from the sun and following care instructions.

Are there any risks or side effects of permanent makeup?

Some people may experience mild discomfort during the procedure. We apply an anesthetic cream to minimise this. Following the procedure, there might be slight redness or swelling, which usually subsides later the same day.

There is a small risk of allergic reactions to pigments used in permanent makeup, though this is rare. We patch test before treatment to help identify any sensitivities.

Infection and scarring are also a potential risk although extremely rare. This can happen if you pick or scratch your enhancement during healing or do not clean it properly.

What areas of the face can be treated with permanent makeup?

Eyeliner

Permanent eyeliner options range from a natural, subtle look to a more dramatic liner, depending on your preference and facial features. It saves time spent on the daily eyeliner application.

Eyebrows

Eyebrow pigmentation, including microblading and the machine tattoo, gives you fuller, more defined brows. These techniques are ideal for people who want to fill in sparse areas, reshape their brows, or create a more uniform and groomed look.

Lips

Permanent makeup includes lip liner and full lip shading. It improves lip shape, adds colour, and definition to the lip border. It is used to correct asymmetry and make your lips look younger.

What is the process of permanent makeup?

  • The process starts with a consultation. We will discuss your expectations, fill out the medical forms, and patch test. This is your chance to ask questions and make sure your desired style is clear to us.
  • Before we start the treatment, we will apply a topical numbing cream to make sure you are comfortable.
  • We will start to implant the pigment. Techniques may vary depending on your preferred result. The procedure takes around two hours.
  • Some people may experience minor swelling, redness, or tenderness immediately following the procedure, but these go away within a few hours. There is minimal downtime, and you can go back to your daily activities straight away.
  • We will give you step by step printed out aftercare instructions to follow, and schedule a top up session for 4-6 weeks later.

Can permanent makeup match different skin tones and personal preferences?

  • Permanent makeup can suit different skin tones, hair colour and personal style.
  • We work with a range of skin tones, from fair to dark. Pigments are always custom mixed to harmonise with your skin tone to create a natural looking result.
  • We custom mix pigments to match your style, preferences, specific hair colour you’re your favourite lipstick. Whether you want a natural look or something a bit bolder, we will work with you to choose colours and shapes for eyebrows, eyeliner, or lips that match your chosen look. Sometimes it isn’t possible to achieve a certain look, but we always explain before the treatment why, and offer an alternative.
  • Your preferences are important part of the process. We take the time to understand the final look you’d like to get, and we always give honest advice if the similar results can be achieved.
  • Modern permanent makeup techniques we use allow us to get natural and long lasting look. Forget about fake looking tattoo from the past.
  • Permanent makeup gives flexible options that can be adapted to match any skin tone or personal taste.

Will permanent makeup change my natural look or facial expressions?

No, permanent makeup enhances but does not change your natural look. It highlights your features in a subtle, natural way, without affecting your facial expressions.

The purpose of permanent makeup is to subtly define and enhance features like eyebrows, eyes, and lips, rather than create heavy and dramatic change. We focus on complementing your facial structure to bring out your natural beauty.

Your facial expressions remain unaffected by permanent makeup. We apply pigment to respect the natural contours of your face (for example follow your natural brow bone).

Before your treatment, you’ll have a consultation to talk about your goals, preferences, and any concerns.

Can permanent makeup be removed if I change my mind?

Yes, permanent makeup can be removed if you no longer want it. Although “permanent” makeup is long lasting, it can be modified or removed.

Removal methods

Laser tattoo removal uses laser to break down pigment particles, which are then naturally removed by the body. Multiple sessions may be needed for full removal, and results depend on pigment depth, colour and type.

Manual tattoo removal involves tattooing a saline solution or other removal solutions into the skin to lift the pigment, also requires multiple sessions.
